Acclimating your new fish and our guarantee of live delivery
When acclimating your
new fish, add ˝ cup or so of water from their new tank to the bag that
they are in every 5 or 10 minutes. Do this until the volume of water in
the bag has at least doubled. Preferably an hour or more of acclimation
period should be used. Your new fish may lie on
the bottom for several hours, this is quite
normal and of no major concern. We recommend that the new discus be kept
at 88-90 degrees F for the first 2 weeks as this will speed up their metabolism
and get them eating much faster. Bloodworms are one of their favorite
foods and are also one of the least polluting of the foods that can be
offered if not eaten. Therefore it is suggested that bloodworms be one
of their first foods offered. Blackworms are hands down there favorite food and may also be offered as one of there first foods... with blackworms make sure to not let your fish get spoiled on them alone. Alternate different foods types with each meal. It is fine to try and feed your new fish
once they are up and swimming around in their new home. Other foods that
can be fed are: Beef or turkey heart mixes, pellet foods, brineshrimp,
earthworms (small red worms whole or chopped larger earthworms), whiteworms
(sparingly), farm raised black worms (sparingly), mosquito larva, daphnia,
flake foods and mysis shrimp. Our water runs a pH from 5.8 – 6.3. Hardness
is maintained at 60ppm TH. Temp on all discus fish besides breeders is
86-90 F. With breeders maintained at 84 F. If any injuries have occured to the fish in shipping (torn fins, scratches etc) add 1 cup of non iodized salt per 100 gallons of water ... 50 gallons 1/2 cup etc. (we use mortons 99.5% pure solar salt for water softners) This treatment works as well if not better than melafix or any other cure in a bottle. Repeat the salt treatment a day or two later after a 35%+ water change. 2 treatments should be enough to clear up most problems. The injuries should heal up in a matter of days with this treatment. Example: I had a male Uaru jump out of a 125 gallon tank to the floor below (5 feet), where he flopped around for several minutes before I realized he was there... his skin was completly rubbed off of over 1/2 of his body. Did the salt treatment and no fungus set in and the fish was completly healed in less than two weeks.... If you have a planted tank, dissolve the salt first in a bucket and then add it to the tank. Most plants with the exception of a few crypts etc. do not show any ill effects of this treatment.
Please note that quite a few of the discus strains do not even come close to matching adult colors when they are juveniles … most do not color up until they are a good 3-5 inch if not more. With a bit of patience, regular tank maintenance and good foods they will all grow into the stunning jewels of your aquarium.
